WWII commemorations in Italy
The city of Cassino has several war cemeteries; information about memorial ceremonies in 2012 will be posted by the end of February.
At the American cemeteries near Rome and Florence, ceremonies are held each Memorial Day, the last Monday in May. The program includes speeches, military band performances, and the laying of wreaths.
Every December in an area near Lucca, services recall the Battle of Sommocolonia, where Afro-American U.S. 92nd Division soldiers battled German forces. The village of Sommocolonia has a small war museum and a cemetery that may be visited throughout the year. The nearby town of Barga has several hotels.
