WWII commemorations in Italy: In mid-May and at other times, memorial ceremonies are held at Cassino, where the Allies battled with the
German for six months and thousands of soldiers died.
At the American cemeteries near Rome and Florence, ceremonies are held each Memorial Day, the last Monday in May. The program includes speeches, military band performances, and the laying of wreaths.
Every December, the town of Barga (in western Tuscany) commemorates the Battle of Sommacolonia, a nearby village where units of the 92nd division fought. Sommocolonia itself has several monuments and a small museum.
